WHERE HAVE ALL THE HOMEYS GONE?
1995
Long time passing! This "interview" is taken from a series of conversations Amir Bey had with a Viet Nam vet -called here "10-4", who had been a post office police officer and currently an unemployed methodone user, whose brother's entire family (wife, two children, and finally himself) died from AIDS. While he was the curator of the Bronx River Art Center and Gallery, Bey noticed that many of the people he used to see congregate along the side of the building were no longer around; 10-4 clues him in.

SEPTEMBER 12, 2007
Martinique's people are like the island itself: rich potential, abundant diversity, rhythmic graciousness and undaunted fluidity. This series of interviews and imagery bear witness that those attributes were put to the test by Hurricane Dean, with both the island and the people meeting the challenge successfully.

AN INTERVIEW WITH THE POET AND PERFORMER JAYNE CORTEZ
SEPTEMBER 12, 2007
Jayne Cortez is as relevant now as she has always been: a young fan commented after hearing her for the first time that if the rap audience were exposed to her, the result would be similar to a forest fire. Hmm.. that fusion (her message, their energies, numbers) would be bigger than what Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis could have been! Don't believe THE HOLLER!? See for yourself; Jayne Cortez and her band Firespitters is a must, so don't miss them!

The Ancestral Libation Chamber and Other Public Projects
OCTOBER 21, 2007
The Ancestral Libation Chamber has recently been installed at the site of the Negro Burial Ground in New York City's City Hall area. What once has been a denied and forgotten part of American history now has significant monuments dedicated to revering and reviving the lives of those who suffered under slavery. Naturally there are differences about how monuments like these are to be implemented and who is going to carry these projects out; the selection for the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial is an example of how controversies can arise.

THE NEW TIMES HOLLER! CHOOSES ??????????? FOR PRESIDENT!
JANUARY 9, 2007
Well, y'all can call this bandwagonism, but THE NEW TIMES HOLLER! has endorsed a mainstream candidate for president. We didn't have to hold our noses over the choice, but we do recognize that anyone who runs for president becomes compromised during the process, and no telling what kinds of land mines, half baked schemes and other residue from the Bush regime the upcoming president's gonna inherit. For example, JFK and The Bay of Pigs; he found that waiting for him and reluctantly went along with it.

THE ASTROLOGY OF RALPH ELLISON
(c) Amir Bey, JAN 1 2008
Ralph Ellison, in the view of this astrologer was important for what he strove to attain in his life: excellence in writing and clarity of perspective that transcended the limitations of racial and ideological categorizations. His stances about African American culture -or lack of them in some people's view- were controversial, yet his writings on Jazz, Blues, and literature are strong affirmations of black people's formative role in the American cultural persona and history. It has been said that Ellison was an elitist and by nature conservative, and his chart shows there are some celestial reasons for it.

His first feature length film, the romantic comedy Hav Plenty, which was released in 1997, received exuberant praise from all of the major publications, but, it didn't do well at the box office, possibly because it was a "black" film that didn't focus on drugs and the usual stereotypical mayhem. An Interview with SUMAYYAH SAMAHA
JULY 17, 2008
ARTS DESK
Special for THE NEW TIMES HOLLER! by AMIR BEY

I recently attended an exhibition of the Lebanese artist Sumayyah Samaha's work at Skoto Gallery in the Chelsea District in New York City (May 29-July5), where I enjoyed her deep evocation of the earth and the forces within it through the rich textures and colors that she used on her canvases. I could almost smell the moistness of them, and I felt the humidity that is often present in storms, and other aspects of nature there; her work seemed to combine natural and societal realities. Sumayyah?s use of needle and thread on paper were interesting, the way the needles cut into the paper, it was if they were unifying as they separated. Many of those pieces seemed to have opposing forces.

THE ASTROLOGY OF BARACK OBAMA

JULY 18, 2008
Well, what more can be said about Barack Obama? What other questions can be asked and answered? THE NEW TIMES HOLLER!'s Astro Portrait Bureau has delved deep into the many layers and facets of this at times puzzling individual. And why is he puzzling? Is it possible that he won't fit into anyone's mold? Or another way to ask it: what do Jesse Jackson and New Yorker Magazine have in common? Hey, anyone with their Sun Squared by Neptune, with an Aquarius Ascendant is hard to figure out!

IMPRESSIONS OF MAE REGINA
SEPTEMBER 14,2008
We are living in a time that requires going forward with new ideas, and also we are in need of a return to our sources. At least that's the feeling that my visit to the Condomble priestess Mae Regina from Terreiro Do Gantois, Bahia, Brazil, left me with. Presently the world we live in is a compartmentalized one. Conceptually for most of us, "Nature" is a far away place, morality and integrity are opportunistic catchwords, the spirit world is something that most have vague notions of, and our ancestors? Well, didn't they die sometime ago? THE NEW TIMES HOLLER! would like to introduce you to Mae Regina.

PRIVATE EYE INVESTIGATIONS
Oct 22, 2008

VISION FESTIVAL XIV
JUNE 20, 2009
Vision Festival XIV, whose Opening Invocation's message, which featured bassist William Parker, drummer Hamid Drake and the festival's organizer, Patricia Nicholson Parker, was "Change". However, as the invocation proceeded, I became absorbed in the form and action of the performance, which was evocative of something more ancient and actually familial, which didn't conjure up change, but continuity. I mentioned that to Patricia, who said, "Remember the only thing constant is change so yes continuity. And change is continuity - but still people are afraid."

At right is a photo of Patricia introducing Marshall Allen, this years' LIFETIME OF RECOGNITION honoree.

All photos and videos, unless specified are by (c) Amir Bey, 2009, using an Apis Lens (It's the Bee's Knee's, man!)

LE REPONDANCE
The Response
(C) AMIR BEY, 2011 Septermber 17

Césaire Vrémontay's blood in an instant brought his descendant to him...
This is an excerpt from La Répondance (The Response). It is time-travelling historical fiction, with the story moving between the early 1800s, 2010, 2011, 2012, in St. Augustine, Florida, Harlem USA, The Lower East Side, Crown Heights, and back to the last Seminole War in Florida.

...the first time he uses human blood for La Répondance: his blood, to bring his descendant as La Répondant. He moves the ladder into position, and with the wind blowing, he gingerly climbs up the ladder and attaches the pitcher to the pole’s top, and climbs down and then waits...

Looking back, his birthdays were always celebrated at the Printmaking Workshop, the oldest continually running printmaking workshop in the country, which he founded in 1949. Here are a series of masks derived from a life cast I did of him in 1982.

A POST-RECONSTRUCTION TALE
2013
May 30

The story of this country won't be fully known until we absorb the complexities of the south and the unique roles played by all of the actors. That will require a reckoning of that time that wasn't allowed then and is almost forgotten now.

TWO RADIO INTERVIEWS WITH AMIRI BARAKA, 1974-1975
2013
May 30
Two interviews were conducted with Amiri Baraka by Amir Bey, when he was a program producer for KPFA-FM in Berkeley, CA. Both show how Baraka had long been devoted to international socialism, and a "cultural worker" on an urgent mission.

A range of topics were discussed: Neocolonialism and international socialism as a liberating force in Africa; the role of the artist in the struggle; the "new spiritualities;" black elected officials - a new class of exploiters?; his artistic and political evolution; the possibility of a black president; differences between him and Haki Madhubuti and Jitu Weusi; control of black music ("No People have control over nuthin'."), and more.

IT'S NOT OVER...

Photo: date unknown
The following is a correspondence from Romeo A. Cherot, who was an editor and journalist for Radio Free Europe dated March 9, 1965, written two days after “Bloody Sunday.” While reading it, I was struck by how primitive a state we were and are still in that basic rights that should be inalienable are still fought for. Social evolution is a slow process it seems!

AUGUST WILSON'S KING HEDLEY II

An Analysis by

Amir Bey January 4, 2016

Photo: Russel Hornsby as King Hedley II
Reading King Hedley II was the most painful and wrenching of August Wilson’s Century Cycle plays for me to experience, and I look forward to seeing it! Although it takes place in Pittsburgh, Washington DC during the Crack years is said to be its inspiration. Supposedly when Wilson visited there he was so unnerved that he stayed in his hotel room.

OUR NIG: HARRIET E. WILSON'S AUTO-BIO NOVEL
An intricate, painful tale of Antebellum North's bigotry

Photo: date unknown
This is a review of Our Nig, an autobiographical novel by Harriet “Hettie” E. Wilson, was published on September 5, 1859 and rediscovered by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. in 1981, was the first African American novel published in the United States. This novella-sized story is a multi-faceted gem. Our Nig gives a complex examination of the prejudice that existed in the antebellum North.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILLY BANG!
An astrological study of an innovative violinist

Photo: date unknown
Mr. Bad Mo'fo' Billy Bang, whose music was more than just a theory. It is interesting how Billy's Sun/Uranus square aspect has parallels with Charley Parker's Sun/Uranu/opposition and Famoudou Don Moye's Sun/Uranus conjunction. The mutual character they share is ENERGY! and their acute need for expression.
