July 25

Based on the Mercury Station-Retrograde (St-Rx) of July 14, The New Times Holler! is able to announce who the projected winner is for this phase of the 2012 Presidential Election: Barack Hussein Obama. Note: "Station" is when a planet seems to stand still before changing its direction, going either Retrograde (Rx) or Direct (D).

MERCURY STATION, JULY 14, 2012

The shape of the election to come?

The Holler! noticed that this year's Presidential Election Day, November 6, will have a Mercury Station-Retrograde and decided to observe how Mercury stations effected both candidates. Because not much fresh information was available for earlier dates, we searched for the next upcoming station before the election, which was this past July 14th.

The July 14th Mercury Station-Retrograde conjoined Obama's Sun within less than a minute - 19" of arc, and that Mercury is the ruler of Romney's chart and the station conjoined his natal Pluto. Aside from those important connections of that station to the natal charts of Obama and Romney, Mercury is an important planet in elections because it deals with counting, tabulating, assessments, documentations and certifications, not to mention the media.

PRESIDENT BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA'S NATAL CHART

GOVERNOR WILLARD MITT ROMNEY'S NATAL CHART

Why President Obama over Romney? There are Mercury strengths and significances in both individuals' natal charts, mainly Obama's Moon in Gemini, and Romney's Ascendant in Gemini, making it his ruling planet. That Romney's ruler turns Rx (Retrograde) pointed to his campaign taking a different turn. On July 14 Mercury approaching Obama's Sun before becoming Rx could also indicate a potential challenge posed by Romney that is pushed back. And since Mercury rules Obama's Moon in Gemini, there could be problems with public standing, and in the private sphere. So we had to observe and see what the July 14th picture would be.

Because that station conjoined Obama's Sun and Romney's Pluto, could it be that the character of the two campaigns translated to be Obama's overt intensity to Romney's cautious stealth? The week leading up to the station, the Mercury St-Rx, gave some resolution to the picture. The Obama campaign threw serious "bombs," while Romney's mood was withdrawn, he was on vacation, and he finally responded in a defensive manner. Romney's activities while he was the CEO of Bain Capital, and his tax history has been under direct scrutiny; Obama dramatically hammered away at his finances in the rain at one campaign stop in Virginia, a battleground state.

Romney's responses have been tepid and muddled. Those attacks have been aided by revelations of Romney's simultaneous positions at Bain and the Salt Lake City Olympics in 1999. As noted, the situations and actions of both candidates are consistent with Mercury's aspects to the aforementioned natal planets: Obama's Sun and Romney's Pluto. We can see how Romney's reticent Pluto shrinks when heated by Obama's Sun. On the other hand, Pluto can "wound" the Sun's light through stealth and collective energies. And this still could be the case: at present Romney is not focusing his full resources; aside from super-pac money, much of the recent funds that the Republicans have raised cannot be used until after the Republican National Convention in Tampa this coming August. Other than the need to create a picture of Romney early, this could be one reason why the Obama camp is hitting Romney hard at this time, when they have this advantage.

For a sports analogy, the champ caught the challenger with some power punches, taking him out of his fight plan, and backed him up. The challenger was unable to hit back effectively. There was no knock-out, but the challenger was tagged effectively, and two of his weapons - Obamacare was not struck down by the Supreme Court, and Romney's being able to claim that his experience as the CEO of Bain Capital would make him a good president - were nullified, with the latter weakened perhaps permanently. Indulging in another sports analogy, during the 2008 primaries, Obama's string of victories were like a series of unanswered baskets that caught Hilary Clinton completely without a plan B; likewise with Romney now, he did not foresee this kind of assault on his financial history, and if he takes too long to adjust, or make his tax history public, it could be fatal. But this is politics and not a boxing match. We've got more than 3 months to go. Can Obama "disqualify" Romney before he is actually nominated? While Obama also has stealth capabilities with his Sun squared Neptune and Jupiter conjunct Saturn in the 12th, I see this as a contest between Obama's 6th House Sun, which is building a case by attacking specific targets of his opponent, and Romney's Watery Stealth, his 4th House Pluto, a hidden iceberg that may have a surge late in the election, or will it implode?

The ruler of Romney's chart is Mercury. Because Mercury is retrograde, is receiving attention to his past, bringing it into focus. For example there is the challenge for him to reveal his role as the CEO in Bain Equity. Since Mercury will go Rx on Election Day, there may be a similar focus on his past leading up to Election Day, as with the days leading up to the July 14th station.

CHART FOR THE GENERAL ELECTION, NOVEMBER 6, 2012

I've done this chart for Washington DC, at Noon. Some astrologers prefer a dawn time, or the time and place that the first polls open. I use Noon because it places the time at the midpoint of the day.

Other than the Election Day station - Retrograde (ST-Rx) of Mercury, that day's Moon's position at 11 degrees 1 minute Leo aspects the same planets of the candidates, Obama's Sun and Romney's Pluto as the St-Rx Mercury did on July 14th, hence my feeling that the July 14th station will find an echo on November 6th. The Moon is generally the ruler of the day, and in an election is relevant to popular results. With this accentuation repeated, I see Obama's Sun and Romney's Pluto as being significators of their campaign. At this time, Obama, who as a Leo, has an association with the Sun, which is the significator of incumbents, and Romney, who along with his Pluto being aspected on 7/14 and on Election Day, has a Moon/Jupiter conjunction in Scorpio, as giving him a strong Plutonian emphasis. He is already identified as a "Plutocrat," someone whose power stems from his wealth, and who has cast his ablility to govern based on his business experience.

Election Day's station natal emphasis is different: occurring at 4 degrees Sagittarius, it opposes Obama's Moon and Romney's Ascendant. While the Mercury Rx station occurs in Obama's 10th House, the house of career and public standing as it opposes his Moon in the 4th House, it is Romney's ruler, will be in his house of partners/competitors. Does this suggest a recount? It will be at station at 6:04 PM EST.

The only station that occurred on Election Day since 1848, a Station/Direct, was the 2000 Bush-Gore election. The 2000 Election Day Mercury Rx not only Stationed, but changed signs from Libra to Scorpio, and then re-entered Libra the next day. It is possible to assume that the upcoming Election Day station suggests that there may be some irregularities or an unusual voting situation, or information concerning the progress of the election will be peculiar. We can already see that the states where Republicans have wanted to enforce voter ID laws may become a source of irregularities, but there may be other complications.

The Bush/Gore election of November 7, 2000 which was Retrograde/Stationary/Direct, was retrograde all day until 9:28 PM, then it went Direct. As mentioned, not after it changed signs from Scorpio to Libra, then back to Scorpio again the next day. It's interesting that the media began to make confusing statements for the outcome of the Florida count about the time of the station then. Can we expect something similar at 6:04 PM this year?

The Holler! sees Obama having an edge come Election Day.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF Rx MERCURIES IN PREVIOUS ELECTIONS

The first presidential election was held in 1788, with George Washington the winner. But due to the distances between localities, and transportation, it wasn't until 1848 that presidential elections could be held on the same day throughout the country, which didn't allow for an Election Day chart to be done for the whole country until 1848. All told, there have been seven presidents elected with Mercury Retrograde all day, with no stations occurring; they were:

Zachary Taylor in 1848 with less than an absolute majority
Ulysses S Grant in 1868
Benjamin Harrison in 1888
William Howard Taft in 1908
Franklin Roosevelt in 1940
John F Kennedy in 1960
Ronald Reagan in 1980

None of those elections had significant irregularities, and the frequency of their occurrence has been within the yearly average for retrograde Mercury occurrences, 7 out of 40 elections since 1848 (not including the 2000 election); there have been 56 elections up to 2008 total. There have been elections that had irregularities and questionable "deals" have been suspected, such as the 1876 election that brought in Rutherford B Hayes. This was the famous "Compromise Election" where back-room concessions were said to be made and there were irregularities that favored both sides. But the planetary configurations for that and other elections are outside of the Mercury Station focus of this article.
