This group was on its way back from La Bain de Josephine named after empress Josephine who was from Martinique. It is a sweet little island/beach with a long, shallow beach loaded with all kinds of huge starfish, sea urchins, medium sized exotic fish and beautiful clusters of coral. Moments after this video, a sudden deluge of a tropical rainstorm blasted the boat and in seconds everyone was drenched.

TRIUMPH OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT by LORENZO PACE
OCT 16, 2007
Lorenzo Pace's Triumph of the Human Spirit is part of what has become a complex of memorials to the Africans who were buried in the old Negro Burial Ground and later uncovered. That uncovering, the result of an accident, has led to an impressive collective effort that arose out of a dormant need; somewhere buried in our present souls was a need to connect with those buried ancestral souls.

THE OPENING OF THE ANCESTRAL LIBATION CHAMBER
OCTOBER 21, 2007
The accidental discovery of Africans of the Old Negro Burial Ground in New York City has lead to two major monuments and many activities. It's as if the buried souls' uncovering released a dormant energy that has resulted in enduring markers for them amid the stone and concrete caverns of Lower Manhattan's City Hall Area.

A MEL EDWARDS SCULPTURE IN SPANISH HARLEM...
OCTOBER 22, 2007
I was walking through the park one day,

In the very mellow month of September,

When I was taken by surprise...by an aluminum of size - -

That turned out to be a Mel Edwards sculpture!

THE ALAMO, BETTER KNOWN AS THE CUBE
OCTOBER 22, 2007
"The Alamo", by Tony Rosenthal, 1967. In a city like New York that can swallow up art and people, this piece, also called "The Cube", has been blessed through its concept and spacious location to have achieved a prominence that even larger works do not.

'Splainin' the ideas behind their work.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?
OCTOBER 22, 2007
This Richard Hunt sculpture is in need of some righteous indignation expressed because it's getting none of its needs addressed by the city of New York. Located at the corner of Morningside Avenue and 125th Street, the thick, thorn-filled bushes made it impossible to examine its state of repair and to even look for the title of the piece or name of the artist! Call and lodge a complaint with the city by dialing 311.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DUKE ELLINGTON MONUMENT
OCTOBER 22, 2007
Attempting to look grand, formal, and elegant, words that are synonymous with Duke's music, this monument to him is also detached and not particularly friendly.

LAFAYETTE SQUARE AND AN ONGOING PROTEST
NOV 16, 2007
Lafayette Square Park has been the scene of many protests and performance art. THE HOLLER! just missed someone levitating there by days. Across from the White House, the park has long been a spot where folks present their points of view. One of the longest running protests has been maintained by Concepcion Picciotto, who has been demonstrating by holding The White House Anti-Nuclear Peace Vigil and against other premeditated excesses by the US since August 1,...

NO SENSE OF DECENCY IN DC
NOV 30, 2007
DC can almost fool you. Because buildings have to be smaller than the monuments, there's more sky than in New York or Chicago, with many trees shedding leaves on a autumn day it almost felt like football Saturday in Ann Arbor or Madison. However, this isn't a collegiate town, it's the capitol, and there's housing changes going on that are pretty for some, frightening for others.

SPIRIT GUIDES
FEBRUARY 14, 2008
Spirit Guides, those shapers of coffee grounds, selectors of tarot cards, and directors of message-laden visions have finally been recorded by a Spirit Sensor Device (SSD) that was developed by The New Times Holler!?s occult science staff. For centuries, the workings of Spirit Guides have been referred to in ancient scriptures, sacred tablets, and found in the tombs of rulers from the dim past. Modern day scientists scoffed at the idea of mysterious entities sending messages in the form of oracles, as well as other kinds of divination.

THE DRUMMERS AND THE GENTRY
JULY 21 2008
THE NEW TIMES HOLLER! REPORTS ON THE DRUMMER?S CIRCLE AT MARCUS GARVEY PARK AND AN INTERVIEW WITH CRAIG HARRIS

As gentrification is changing Harlem, USA, certain neighborhood traditions are being met by the disapproval of new arrivals on the scene. For decades, Marcus Garvey Park, also known as Mount Morris Park, whose north eastern entrance is located at 124th Madison, drummers, dancers, horn players and other celebrants have met at late afternoon to play music, dance, and sing in a free and communal manner. While most of the musicians and dancers are African American, Caribbean, and African, many people of other ethnic backgrounds who come by or live in the neighborhood join in. The music often lasts until after 10 ? 11 PM. In the last two years, owners of a newly finished condo located on the corner of 124th and 5th Avenue at 2002 5th Avenue, with apartments going up to $1,000,000, have complained about the music and gathering, saying that it is too loud, and lasts too long into the night. Last year a compromise was reached whereby the drummers were moved to an area where it was thought the music would not carry to those dwellers. However, the new residents at the condo have complained again, but at times the complaints have been low-down, as one individual sent out an Email suggesting that the congregants be?.lynched!? This July 6, The New York Times published an article, An Old Sound in Harlem Draws New Neighbors' Ire that reveals the tensions between the new condo owners and the culture of the community have not ceased. Historically, the drummers are credited with making the park safe during the Age of Crack, sometimes playing up to 10 hours.

MAE REGINA SHARES CONDOMBLE
SEPTEMBER 14, 2008
THE NEW TIMES HOLLER! was the grateful recipient of the wise insights and spiritual gifts of Mae Regina, from the Terreiro Do Gantois, Bahia, Brazil. Mae Regina is a mae velha, which means that she is a senior ?Mother?. The form of the Yoruba religion that she practices is Condomble. In Brazil women read cowrie shells, or buzios, and the readings are called Jogo do Buzios (the ?game? of shells). The shells are thrown on a meza, or table, which is a woven wreath of sea horses, herbs, shells, and many other elements from nature.

OBAMA'S MOTORCADE COMES TO TOWN!

On October 20, Obama paid a visit to New York City for a series of fund raisers. THE HOLLER! Got a tip that the President's motorcade was going up the West Side Highway, and got to the scene. Quite impressive, in terms of its size and energy! In the video the 1st phalanx of motorcycle cops were missed. What we do have is the first three limos after the motorcycles, of which Obama's is the 3rd and you can spot it by the Presidential seal on the door. What follows are many SUVs with guards heavily armored like football players; then three ambulances, then seven motorcylces, followed by more SUVs and police cars. This video is 1'25", but the motorcade - a small army - kept coming for another minute. Among the interested specators, you'll see Mr. John Q Public, Kazembe of The Brecht Forum. Even the policeman seems more like a spectator then a guard.
