| JULY 21 2008 | THE NEW TIMES HOLLER! REPORTS ON THE DRUMMER?S CIRCLE AT MARCUS GARVEY PARK AND AN INTERVIEW WITH CRAIG HARRIS
As gentrification is changing Harlem, USA, certain neighborhood traditions are being met by the disapproval of new arrivals on the scene. For decades, Marcus Garvey Park, also known as Mount Morris Park, whose north eastern entrance is located at 124th Madison, drummers, dancers, horn players and other celebrants have met at late afternoon to play music, dance, and sing in a free and communal manner. While most of the musicians and dancers are African American, Caribbean, and African, many people of other ethnic backgrounds who come by or live in the neighborhood join in. The music often lasts until after 10 ? 11 PM. In the last two years, owners of a newly finished condo located on the corner of 124th and 5th Avenue at 2002 5th Avenue, with apartments going up to $1,000,000, have complained about the music and gathering, saying that it is too loud, and lasts too long into the night. Last year a compromise was reached whereby the drummers were moved to an area where it was thought the music would not carry to those dwellers. However, the new residents at the condo have complained again, but at times the complaints have been low-down, as one individual sent out an Email suggesting that the congregants be?.lynched!? This July 6, The New York Times published an article, An Old Sound in Harlem Draws New Neighbors' Ire that reveals the tensions between the new condo owners and the culture of the community have not ceased. Historically, the drummers are credited with making the park safe during the Age of Crack, sometimes playing up to 10 hours.

OBAMA'S MOTORCADE COMES TO TOWN!
On October 20, Obama paid a visit to New York City for a series of fund raisers.
THE HOLLER! Got a tip that the President's motorcade was going up the West Side Highway, and got to the scene. Quite impressive, in terms of its size and energy!
In the video the 1st phalanx of motorcycle cops were missed. What we do have is the first three limos after the motorcycles, of which Obama's is the 3rd and you can spot it by the Presidential seal on the door.
What follows are many SUVs with guards heavily armored like football players; then three ambulances, then seven motorcylces,
followed by more SUVs and police cars. This video is 1'25", but the motorcade - a small army - kept coming for another minute. Among the interested specators, you'll see
Mr. John Q Public, Kazembe of The Brecht Forum. Even the policeman seems more like a spectator then a guard.
